Temani Pesh-wa Petroglyph Trail at Columbia Hills State Park |
Columbia Hills State Park
Columbia Hills State Park, once known as Horsethief Lake, is a popular fishing area and campground. However, long before the area was designated a state park, this was a gathering ground for Native Americans, who fished for salmon at nearby Celilo Falls. Here the Lewis and Clark expedition camped after running the “narrows” and visited an Indian village where Clark counted 20 wooden houses. Interpretive signs and tours of many Indian petroglyphs including the famous Tsagaglala–“She Who Watches.” Tours Friday and Saturday mornings, April through October, at 10am by appointment only. Located in Washington State, east of The Dalles 2 miles on Hwy 14 at milepost 85. (509)767-1159)
For petroglyph viewing near Maryhill Museum walk the Temani Pesh-wa Trail at Columbia Hills State Park where pictographs and petroglyphs are on display |

Memaloose Island |
Memaloose State Park
Named for the river island used by early Indians as a burial ground and described by Lewis & Clark. who called it “Sepulchar Island.” The name derived from “Memaloose Ilahee,” Chinook jargon words for “land of the dead.” A prominent obelisk on the island marks the grave of Victor Trevitt, the only white man to be buried there. Trevitt, who was once married to an Indian woman, claimed the only way he would get into heaven was to sneak in with the Indians. Interpretive wayside. Overnight camping available (westbound only). Located west of The Dalles 11 miles on Interstate 84 |
